LaSalle Grad Students Tackle Stuttering with Yoga

Hawthorne Yoga & Reiki will be hosting a study on yoga breathing techniques (pranayama) and its effects on reducing speech dysfluencies.  Three graduate students from LaSalle University’s Speech Language Science Hearing Program are interested in gathering members for this study, specifically adults over the age of 18 years who stutter.

The study will include free yoga sessions with a certified yoga teacher (CYT) for those participants who qualify. The goal of this study is to measure anxiety, feelings about ones stuttering, and severity levels before, during, and after undergoing the yoga breathing techniques. Measures will be taken every 6 weeks to see if treatment is effective.  The 3-month study involves 12 yoga classes over 6 weeks followed by 6 classes over 6 weeks.  After week 12, no direct instruction will be provided and participants are expected to engage in at-home practice. There will be a follow up appointment for each participant two months later to discuss results, concerns, thoughts, and to gather information on measures.
